Day 1: Arrive Johannesburg (D)
On arrival at Johannesburg International Airport, you are met and assisted to the Car Hire Depot. Collect your vehicle and head out of the city to the mountains of the Drakensberg. Your journey of approximately 4 hours driving time, takes you to an area of scenic beauty, which has been declared a World Heritage Site.
Day 2: Drakensberg (BD)
The majestic Drakensberg is the country's highest and most impressive mountain range rising to over 3 000 metres. Known to the Zulu people as Ukhahlamba, or 'Barrier of Spears', the Mountains of the Dragon provide a magnificent semi-circular border between KwaZulu-Natal and the inland mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. With a host of activities on offer including horse-riding, hiking, mountain biking, bowls, tennis, golf and much more, you'll be kept busy!
Day 3 & 4: Umhlanga (B)
After breakfast this morning, travel to the tropical seaside city of Umhlanga, which is just north of Durban. Umhlanga boasts a wonderful seaside promenade, pavement cafés and an addictive laid back vibe! Spend the next 2 days lazing on the beach. For the shopaholics, the Gateway shopping mall is just minutes away.
Day 5: Zululand (BD)
Head north into Zululand, home to the most famous tribe in Africa, the Zulu, as well as a wealth of nature reserves. The Zululand region abounds with wildlife in extensive reserves within easy reach of Durban. The largest of these is the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve, where the white rhinoceros was rescued from extinction.
Day 6: Zululand (BD)
Spend today exploring Hluhluwe Game Park, the oldest game reserve in Africa where Zulu kings such as Dingiswayo and Shaka hunted and put in place the first conservation laws. Visitors can also go for game walks in the reserve accompanied by experienced, armed rangers and have the opportunity of coming to within a few paces of rhinos, giraffe, buffalo, elephant and a range of other African animals (own account).
Day 7: Battlefields (BD)
Travel inland, where you find yourself in the heart of battlefield territory, where Boer, Brit and Zulu fought bloody battles over many years. The region boasts the largest concentration of battlefields in South Africa drawing visitors from all over the world. Here military engagements that were to shape the course of South African and world history, and rock the pedestal of the British Empire, raged over the green hills and sweeping grasslands of the region.
Day 8: Battlefields (BD)
This morning join a guided tour of the battlefields, with a specialist tour guide, who can bring this area to life for you, with their spell-binding tales!
Day 9: Johannesburg (B)
After breakfast, travel back to Johannesburg International Airport, and drop off your hire car. Check-in, in time for your onward flight.
