    Climate
    Highlights

Cape Town has a Mediterranean-type climate, which makes for beautiful, hot summer days with day time temperatures averaging 29 degrees Celsius, and cool evenings (Summer: October to March). During the winter months the average temperature is around 20 degrees Celsius (Winter: April to September). As Cape Town sits at the southern most point in Africa, winters are subject to inclement weather, interspersed with clear, crisp days.

Cape Town as a destination 'pumps' during the end of year school holidays of December and January, when locals descend on the Cape's gorgeous beaches to revel in the Cape's long, hot summer days.  As the kids return to school at the end of Jan, Cape Town 'empties out' somewhat and the weather is still fabulous right up until the end of March, so this is a good time to go. What's also great about summer in Cape Town, is that the days are long, so you have more time to explore and to plain get out and about and enjoy the attractions of Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula. During the months of December and January, hot winds nicknamed the Cape Doctor blow away the city's pollution, dieing down into February.

May to August, temperatures begin to cool down and you can expect some rain, however Cape Town is generally great all year round, so when it rains, a roaring fire in the Cape Winelands (Cape Wine Route), wine glass in hand (of course) and incredible mountain vistas and vineyards as your 'day dream' canvas, is a good place to hunker down. But don't get too comfy, as clear skies and a balmy winter's day is always just around the corner.

The weather in Cape Town is often described as having 'four seasons in a day' and can be unpredictable, from sunshine on one side of the mountain, to rain on the other.  So the 'onion' metholody applies - particularly at the top of Table Mountain - dress in layers, so they can be peeled off (or on) as required.

    How to get there

Cape Town International Airport is the second largest airport in South Africa and handles numerous direct international flights, as well as connecting domestic flights to most cities / destinations within South Africa. Regional flights to African cities are also numerous, such as Windhoek in Namibia, Maun in Botswana and Maputo in Mozambique (see detailed schedule below).

Cape Town International Airport services around 3.8 million passengers a year, with airfares ranging from first class to low cost airlines on domestic routes. Flights between Europe and South Africa average around 12 hours and flights between the USA and South Africa are around 15 hours from the east coast.

For the past seven years running, Cape Town International Airport has won the 'World Travel Awards for Africa's Leading Airport'. The airport is currently undergoing extensive renovations in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, however huge efforts are being channeled to ensure minimum negative impact on travellers during renovations.

Cape Town International Airport is modern, first class and offers everything an international tourist might require, from shops, to bureau de change, car rental, restaurants and more. Thompsons Africa has a strong Meet & Greet presence at Cape Town International Airport - look out for our friendly Meet & Greet staff, who will be holding branded sign boards with your names blazoned across, and our bright uniforms were chosen for their effect - we are visible.

All our passengers arriving into Cape Town are met and assisted.  Particularly for first time travellers we believe that a Meet & Greet is an essential ingredient within our clients itineraries as it sets the tone for your vacation - happy smiles, along with welcome assistance and advice will 'set you on your way' with confidence.

Updated schedule of regional flights is currently being worked on and will be available shortly.

    What to Expect

If you are travelling to Africa, Cape Town is definitely a 'must see' on your vacation check list - it's a beautiful city, snuggled at the foot of Table Mountain, which in itself is impressive. Cape Town has a unique flavour, there is lots to do, fabulous restaurants and lots of them, interesting and quirky shops and shopping (artists flock to Cape Town for good reason - natural inspiration abounds).

The Cape Peninsula's scenery is quite spectacular - mountains, oceans green-blue and crystal clear, cliff edge drives, award winning wine estates and a cosmopolitan, pavement café vibe. At night Cape Town rocks with cocktail bars that overlook the ocean, great night clubs, music festivals and concerts - Cape Town has earned a reputation as the city of culture, arts and crafts, with wine festivals, a whale festival and so much more throughout the year.

So now that we have established that Cape Town is not only scenically gorgeous, but there is great entertainment as well, there are numerous 'ways to vacation' in Cape Town, and her surrounds, that will best suit you...
