Cape Town has a Mediterranean-type climate, which makes for beautiful, hot summer days with day time temperatures averaging 29 degrees Celsius, and cool evenings (Summer: October to March). During the winter months the average temperature is around 20 degrees Celsius (Winter: April to September). As Cape Town sits at the southern most point in Africa, winters are subject to inclement weather, interspersed with clear, crisp days.
Cape Town as a destination 'pumps' during the end of year school holidays of December and January, when locals descend on the Cape's gorgeous beaches to revel in the Cape's long, hot summer days. As the kids return to school at the end of Jan, Cape Town 'empties out' somewhat and the weather is still fabulous right up until the end of March, so this is a good time to go. What's also great about summer in Cape Town, is that the days are long, so you have more time to explore and to plain get out and about and enjoy the attractions of Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula. During the months of December and January, hot winds nicknamed the Cape Doctor blow away the city's pollution, dieing down into February.
May to August, temperatures begin to cool down and you can expect some rain, however Cape Town is generally great all year round, so when it rains, a roaring fire in the Cape Winelands (Cape Wine Route), wine glass in hand (of course) and incredible mountain vistas and vineyards as your 'day dream' canvas, is a good place to hunker down. But don't get too comfy, as clear skies and a balmy winter's day is always just around the corner.
The weather in Cape Town is often described as having 'four seasons in a day' and can be unpredictable, from sunshine on one side of the mountain, to rain on the other. So the 'onion' metholody applies - particularly at the top of Table Mountain - dress in layers, so they can be peeled off (or on) as required. |
