TRAIN TRAVEL IN NAMIBIA
Namibia is often referred to as 'Big Sky' country, renowned for wide open spaces and dazzling sunrises and sunsets, the meandering route of the Desert Express pays particular homage to the vibrant colours of dawn and dusk in the Namib Desert.
|
- The Desert Express journeys between Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, and Swakopmund, Namibia's premier coastal resort town.
- Departures are on a Friday from Windhoek, and on a Saturday from Swakopmund.
- The Desert Express also offers a four day Etosha sojourn, and a six day Swakopmund and Etosha itinerary on selected departures.

This overnight train journey provides an explosion of unique scenery, as well as two off-train excursions en route. Just outside of Windhoek the train stops off at a game ranch for a safari drive, where guests have the opportunity to spot unique Namibian wildlife, then the train's second excursion is near Swakopmund where guests get to view/experience the glorious sand dunes of the Namib Desert. | Whilst on board, guests can relax in the popular Spitzkoppe Lounge, which like the entire train is fully air-conditioned (smoking is only allowed in the conference coach). The Lounge opens at 06h00 for those early risers who can enjoy a freshly brewed coffee. A full bar service is offered on board and also includes specialty drinks and cocktails.
|
Dinner and breakfast are served in the Welwitschia Restaurant, which is the coach adjacent to the Lounge. The overhead lights in this coach are something special - sand blasted glass panels depicting animal footprints in mud. Here, guests will dine on superb three course dinners prepared in the kitchen by the resident chefs. |
|
 |
- There are 24 fully air-conditioned compartments, in 4 sleeper coaches, each with their own en suite bathroom, which has been cleverly designed to make maximum use of minimum space.
- Each compartment may accommodate one, two or three passengers.
- Each compartment converts to a private lounge during the day.
- All compartments are stylishly decorated and reflect the name of the coach it is located in, (Kokerboom, Oryx, Springbuck & Meerkat) with matching carpet and sand blasting on the doors.
- Valuables can be stored in the small safe in the compartment.
