Golf in South Africa
Print | Email

South Africa is one of the worlds most exciting golfing destinations. Our "in house" golf expert can assist you with all your requirements in creating the perfect African golf experience. For the best value, best advice and most professional golf packages in Southern Africa, the Thompsons Golf division cannot be beaten.

Our resident golf / travel expert can assist with all aspects of your Golf Safari. Accommodation, car hire or vehicle charter with a guide, course bookings and advice and any additional services can be booked with Thompsons.

South Africa offers one of the most diverse and dramatic golfing experiences in the world, with top courses and a superb climate that allows year-round play. Along with the usual hazards of bunkers, lakes, rivers and forests you might find a crocodile guarding the green at the 13th hole on the Sun City Lost Golf Course!

South Africa is also renowned for courses surrounded by stunning scenery, crashing surf at the Wild Coast Golf Course, the Outeniqua Mountains at Fancourt and wine farms bordering the Erinvale Golf Course in Somerset West. South Africa offers an unforgettable golfing experience with the opportunity of playing at some of the finest golf courses, whilst allowing time to explore the stunning coastlines, superb vineyards, exciting wildlife safaris and some of the finest hotels in the world.

Our programs include golf courses of the highest calibre, rated in the top 100 by the 'South African Golf Digest', a noted golfing magazine for lovers of the game, and a Thompsons Golfing Specialist has inspected each course.

GOLF IN SOUTH AFRICA

  • In South Africa, distances are measured in metres. To convert from metres to yards, multiply by 1.09.
  • Golf clubs can be hired from most golf courses.
  • Caddies are good value for money and range from ZAR120-00 to ZAR150-00.
  • A good caddy will have a good 'course sense', be able to read greens and advise on club selection  - not just merely carrying your bag and helping you find lost balls!  (Almost like a golf-guide to the course).
  • Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings are generally for members only at Club courses.
  • The use of sunscreen lotion is recommended.
  • When playing on the coastal golf courses it is better to play in the morning due to the wind.
  • Mobile phones should be switched off at all times on the golf course.
  • When playing in the higher altitudes such as Johannesburg or Sun City, take into  account that the ball will travel approximately 10% further than at coastal golf courses.
  • Restaurants at golf clubs are generally casual.
