    Climate
    Highlights

Kruger enjoys a sub tropical climate which equates to hot, rainy summers (October to March) whilst during the winter months (April to September) the days are warm and dry, with cold nights and early mornings. Summer rains transform Kruger into a lush flowering paradise.  The increased foliage does make it harder to see the animals, however, you will still be entertained with a myriad of animal species and the birdlife 'booms'. Winter, traditionally offers the best game viewing as the vegetation is sparse and water is restricted to rivers and waterholes, making it easier to spot the wildlife.

You will not be disappointed in your game experience whether it be summer or winter in Kruger - each offers its own special opportunities. Summer temperatures reach an average of 32 degrees Celsius, with spectacular afternoon thunderstorms and heavy downpours, whereas winter temperatures average around 22 degrees Celsius, with cold nights and early mornings.

    How to get there
The Kruger National Park covers a vast area and there are many access points along the Park's border.  However, the most popular section of the Park is southern Kruger.  In the south, the closest airport to the Park is Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, which is 60km from the Numbi Gate. This airport has connecting flights form Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.

    • The ultimate game viewing experience - an open safari vehicle game drive with an experienced ranger.
** A game drive with a professional ranger will bring you close to Africa's wildlife.  Our rangers know how to 'read' the signs of the bush, interpret the mood of certain animals, and they have a wealth of knowledge and experience that will keep you enthralled.  A good ranger will bring the 'bush to life'.
** Your game drive is conducted in specially adapted vehicles, so that you are seated in an elevated position to appreciate good views of the bush and wildlife.  The vehicles are open so that you can be as close to the natural bush as possible.
** Professional game rangers are always in radio contact with each other and will report good sightings to each other, therefore your chances of viewing wildlife are greatly improved.
    • While nothing can be guaranteed, in Kruger, the chances are good that you will get to see the Big Five.
    • Why not go on a walking safari and get close to nature... sometimes closer than expected!
A walking safari is a more tactile experience with the African bush.  Rangers discuss the more intricate workings of the flora and fauna, the insects, reptiles and birds - visitors have the opportunity to touch and smell the bush and discover the smaller inhabitants that are equally as important as the larger game that dominate the plains.
    • Enjoy a sundowner perhaps overlooking one of the dry river beds in Kruger.
Africa produces some of the most incredible sunsets on planet earth!  You will be amazed at the cacophony of insect 'buzz' as the sun begins to set. Early mornings and late afternoon are very special times in the bush, and this is also the time that the predators are at their most active.

THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO HOLIDAY IN THE KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

SELF DRIVE / SELF GUIDED SAFARI VACATION

Lions at rest on the warm tar roads within the Kruger Park Kruger as in the case of all the National Parks in South Africa is a great 'do it yourself' wilderness experience.  The roads are well maintained and the facilities within the Park are good. Designed so that visitors can discover the 'magic within', so to speak, entirely at your own pace, with map in hand, venturing forth in your own vehicle to experience this wild and beautiful wildlife sanctuary. One can comfortably self drive throughout Kruger, perhaps even staying at different rest camps the length of the Park, to experience the variety of flora, fauna and wildlife that Kruger has to offer.
Please see additional information regarding rest camp accommodation throughout the Park.

Thompsons Africa will be able to put together a self drive package within Kruger making use of any of Kruger's Rest Camps and facilities. We do still recommend however, that on a self drive package, you do pre-book onto an open vehicle safari drive at some point on your journey as this is a truly rewarding experience. Trained game rangers bring the bush to life with their knowledge and enthusiasm. They are also in constant contact by two-way radio with other vehicles within the Park and can therefore pick up when good sightings are reported.

    • All the main camps have day visitor areas. There are also picnic spots and other day visitor lookout/stop points distributed throughout the Park.
    • Swimming for day visitors is allowed at Skukuza and at Letaba.
    • All of the Parks main rest camps have restaurants (Orpen and Crocodile Bridge rest camp only have take-away facilities for light lunches).
    • There is an ATM facility at Skukuza.
    • Petrol and diesel are available at all major camps. The garages in the Park only accept cash or garage cards, therefore you are advised to take sufficient South African Rands with you to pay for fuel during the duration of your stay.
