The flagship of the South African National Parks, the Kruger National Park is so vast (20 000 square kilometers - approximately the size of Whales!) that dependant upon where you are, your wildlife experience can vary quite dramatically as far as type of vegetation and the wildlife it supports.  In a day's game drive a visitor can pass through three or four different eco-systems!  Every area in the park is equally fascinating, but those with limited time should visit the southern section of the Kruger Park as the terrain here is of open savannah grasslands which supports large herds of antelope and of course the cats and carnivores that follow suit.

Established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African lowveld, the Kruger National Park is unrivalled in its diversity of life forms, including 507 recorded species of bird, and is a world leader in advanced environmental management techniques and policies.

The planned Transfrontier Park between South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique will bring the size of this wildlife park to spectacular proportions.  The Transfrontier Park is not yet a reality, but fences are slowly 'coming down'.

For tourists in the not to distant future, the Transfrontier Park will be an incredible wildlife haven, that will span three countries, with the combined goal of the preservation of wildlife.

The far North of the Kruger Park is remote and is renowned for its fabulous birding, 'different' plant life - including the 'upside-down' Boabab tree, and large herds of elephant and buffalo.  In the north of Kruger, it is more difficult to find the big cats, however the remoteness in itself has its own rewards - a far more private and intimate safari experience.  This area is great for second time visitors, who want to learn all of Kruger's secrets.

The far northern National Park camp is Punda Maria, but more recently a private concession, namely Pafuri Camp, which is collaboration between the private sector and the Makuleki people, is another wonderful accommodation option, that combines understated luxury, wildlife and also for those who make it their business to ensure that their holiday travel contributes to the upliftment of local communities, this private concession with the Makuleki tribe of the area, certainly can lay claim to responsible tourism and a partnership in business for both parties.

The north is also rich in archaeological remains, with examples such as the Thulamela ruins at which mysterious golden artifacts have been found.

The Kruger National Park has a well established road network and many rest camps and bush camps throughout the park that one can choose from.  Travelling south the area surrounding Shingwedzi camp, (On the banks Shingwedzi river with its seasonal flooding) elephants and buffalo abound, and cat viewing is good. The bushveld is Mopane shrubveld and stunted Mopane trees.

The further south one travels, the more National Park rest camps you will find - this is due to the 'easier' game viewing opportunities that the savannah grasslands provide.  The central area includes Letaba and Oliphants with more broken terrain, characterised by the Oliphants and Letaba rivers, Mopane bushveld and small kopjes (granite outcrops). Riverine bush along the rivers attract hippos and crocodiles and the occasional black rhino. This area is also quite famous for leopard sightings.

Satara is known for some of the best game viewing - surrounded by vast open savannah grassland, and layers of Marula and Acacia trees, attracting browsing and grazing animals, the largest numbers of wildebeest and zebras occur here.  The result - lion country and great cheetah sightings. The black rhino also frequent this area - although they are notoriously hard to find as these giant animals are habitually secretive.

Thompsons Wolhuter Tented Safari
Thompsons Africa is the only tour operator to have a private camping concession just south of Satara camp (9km south). This is prime game viewing country and as it is a private concession, the experience for our guests is intimate and personal.  This is an intimate back to nature experience, with your own guide and chef and a limited number of clients.  Don't be fooled though - this is no basic camping tour - our guests do not participate in any form of camp duties, our fireside bush cuisine is exceptional, our tents are comfortable and our bush showers and ablutions are the very best.  After a great day game viewing, fireside stories with 'good night action' - hyena and lion often close by - the Wolhuter is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.  Our Wolhuter Safari is named after one of the first pioneering game wardens of the Kruger National Park, whose incredible wildlife tales are legendary - particularly when he was taken from his horse by a large male lion, unceremoniously dragged to a nearby bush by his shoulder and Harry Wolhuter calmly used his pocket dagger, after feeling the beast with his free hand to locate his heart, and downed the lion with a single thrust into the 'beasts' heart... and survived - a chilling story of survival almost a century ago!

The southern third of the park is the most accessible, and therefore most popular with tourists. Game viewing is excellent, with regular sightings of the entire 'Big Five' clan - lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo - due to the diverse bush, and the number of waterholes and rivers in this section of the park.  A popular route is the "Golden Triangle" between Skukuza main camp, Tshokwane and lower Sabi, and includes the Sabi River, famous for herds of animals in winter, and cats all year round.

Thompsons Day Tours in and around the Kruger National Park

Thompsons Africa is based in Hazyview, 28 km from Pretoriuskop, (southern Kruger) the oldest rest camp in the park. Pretoriuskop was where the founders of the park lived - Colonel James Stevenson Hamilton and Harry Wolhuter (famous for killing a lion with a hand knife!).  The town of Hazyview has grown over the years into a bustling little town, with good restaurants, coffee shops, curio and art galleries, and is a great hub of activity.  From our office here, we offer open vehicle safaris into the Park - morning, afternoon and full day as well as walking safaris.  So if you choose to stay within the Park, or on the outskirts of the Park you will be able to easily 'jump-on' to a Thompsons safari.

Thompsons Africa also have an office based at Malelane, directly south of the Kruger Park, which also offers great access into the park.  Here again we offer the 'full' range of safari experiences, from morning and afternoon game drives to walking safaris.  Malelane is popular for clients entering South Africa from Mozambique.  Alternatively guests staying in Malelane can pop over to Maputo for a taste of Mozambican culture - a steamy mix of cuban-salza and awesome seafood!

In the surrounding areas of Hazyview and Malelane, Thompsons Africa have put together day tour programmes, which take in the highlights of the area: Guests can go on elephant back safaris, visit the Jane Goodall Institute and Chimpanzee Eden, visit the Panorama Route with the vast Blyde River Canyon and many scenic waterfalls, enjoy a cultural village tour, festival and feast and the varied adventure options on offer include, balloon safaris, white water rafting and tubing, abseiling, horse and quad bike trails and more.
An array of Safari Getaway Packages to choose from...
Thompsons Africa promotes and sells a varied number of packages within Kruger and on her borders.  So if one of our fully escorted tours into the Kruger Park doesn't tickle your fancy, you can choose to 'go-it-alone' and we'll put together a package with car hire and comfortable National Park rest camp accommodation and you can blaze your own trail from the south to the north of Kruger.  Alternatively those with less time on their hands, can choose to fly into Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, transfer to a luxurious private concession within Kruger or one of the private game reserves of the Sabi Sands which shares an unfenced border with the Kruger National Park - there is a getaway to suit every budget and also every taste.   We have packaged together a range of accommodation options to offer you the best of the Kruger National Park as well as the many 'other' wilderness reserves throughout South Africa.

Thompsons Africa offer a range of FULLY ESCORTED TOUR options which take in not only the Kruger National Park, but also other noted wildlife reserves in South Africa.  So if your preference is to be escorted/guided throughout the country with specialist guides, in top-of-the-range vehicles, just to kick-back and relax and let someone else worry about the logistics of your trip, whilst you socialize and merely enjoy all that the country has to offer, then an escorted tour is the choice for you.
The following escorted tours might be just what you are looking for:

Thompsons Africa have also developed safaris specifically for FAMILY & SMALL GROUPS ON SAFARI.  These intimate safaris are for groups of 2 to 8 people, and are flexible, fully-catered and private

We have put together two packages that are tried and tested and take in two of the best game viewing areas within South Africa: The Kruger National Park and the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park.  However the beauty of these family safaris is that we can design an itinerary to suit you and your family/group of friends.  The length of your safari and other details, such as the length of your game drive and the times of your game drives, is your choice.  Meal times and meal content will be catered for as per the families requirements.

Best of all though, your children's natural exuberance won't disturb other guests!  Our camp staff have an understanding of children and go to extra lengths to accommodate families.  The entire experience is far more relaxing and rewarding for every member of the family.  As this is a 'tailored' safari, additional activities can easily be added to suit individual interests, from guided walks, boat rides, beach trips, snorkelling to SCUBA diving.  A fully escorted and customised safari allows the whole family to share in the wildlife experience.
