Other Attractions in and around the Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

VICTORIA FALLS TOWN
The town itself is within walking distance of The Falls, on the outskirts of the game-rich Zambezi National Park - the wildlife in Zimbabwe does tend to 'overflow' into the populated areas and don't be surprised to see elephant, buffalo and zebra on the outskirts of town itself minding their own business and munching on the manicured foliage.  Within, and around town there is plentiful accommodation options to choose from, from camping to five star luxury, and everything in-between.  Thompsons Africa can assist you with all your accommodation requirements, whatever your budget.

THE BIG TREE
This is a large baobab tree near The Falls, which has a diameter of 16 meteres, is 20 metres tall and is estimated to be between 1000 to 1500 years old!  The baobab is often referred to as the 'upside down' tree, with it's numerous and intertwined branches sprouting from the top of it's wide trunk, looking a lot like a tangled mass of roots - the baobab is with out a doubt one of the most recognizable symbols of Africa.  The oldest recorded baobab tree achieved a circumference of 30 metres and was estimated at 4000 years old.  These enormous trees can be found throughout Southern Africa and are extremely drought resistant due to their large water storage abilities.  The Big Tree is also of historical interest as it was the meeting place for early pioneers in the late 1800's to overnight before travelling on to the Old Drift Settlement which is today the town of Livingstone in Zambia.

ZAMBEZI NATIONAL PARK
With 40 kilometres of river frontage, the Zambezi National Park, together with the Victoria Falls National Park, cover an area of 56000 hectares.  This small reserve offers a surprisingly game-rich safari experience, with wallowing hippos, a whole host of antelope species (sable, eland, zebra, giraffe, kudu, waterbuck and impala to name but a few) and the big five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino).  This National Park extends from the Victoria Falls National Park and animals are able to roam freely between these two National Park's as well as into the Matetsi Safari area, the Kazuma Pan National Park and the Hwange National Park to the south.  The National Park is well worth a visit, with abundant wildlife and prolific bird life, you will not be disappointed.  Thompsons Africa will be able to assist you with guided safaris into this national reserve.
