Mozambique

It’s no surprise that Mozambique and the islands are a favourite venue for honeymoons. Laze the time away, swinging on a hammock with palm fronds swaying above you in the gentle breeze. The uncrowded beaches in both directions are lapped by warm, gentle turquoise waters. That’s the life!  It’s postcard perfect!  Go north to the beach resorts at Vilanculos. Or perhaps you prefer the scintillating beauty of one of the islands of the Bazaruto or Quirimba archipelagos.  Access to these islands is via Vilanculos and Pemba respectively, direct from Maputo or Johannesburg.
 

 

 

Feeling lazy? Do nothing.  Feeling energetic?  Go scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, deep sea/saltwater fly fishing or wind-surfing. Take a trip in a traditional dhow.
 
The enjoyment continues when the sun sinks: the islands resorts and the city of Maputo sway to their own unique beat.  A night out on the town will have you swinging to jazzy, Latin rhythms.  Feel the same vibe at a pavement café, as you dine on Mozambique’s renowned fresh seafood - drenched in peri-peri sauce, if you’re very brave.
 

 

 

Maputo (formerly Lourenco Marques) still has the charm of an olde world Portuguese harbour city.  In the old town, the maze of narrow streets is lined with 19th century buildings.  Shop around for exotic spices, nuts and trinkets at the town’s lively markets, especially in the Costa do Sol.  For art lovers, the National Art Museum has an intriguing collection of the work of Mozambique’s finest contemporary artists.
