Guided Journeys

In the arranging and operating of variable sized tours in Southern Africa, with set itineraries and frequent departures, Thompsons Africa leads the field. These packaged holidays offer something special, unique and memorable and after 35 years of perfecting our tours, we proudly claim that our service cannot be beaten. Our signature product, ‘Fully Guided’ means what it says: we do all the work, you relax and enjoy the experience, knowing that you are in capable and experienced hands.

Absorb the highlights of Africa under the most relaxing conditions. This is the ultimate in convenience and safety. Sit back and relax, allowing your highly competent Tour Guide and Driver to take care of all the details. Our Tour Guides are trained to provide fascinating information and commentary in an entertaining manner on every aspect of Africa you’re likely to encounter.

Our company has grown to be what it is by the provision of superior quality, top-notch service, and value-for-money holidays. Our reputation is outstanding, and we will keep it that way.

If anyone understands family travel, Thompsons Africa does. We offer the perfect package: just the family or small group (four to eight people), a Tour Guide and the most flexible of itineraries to suit younger members especially.

The number and length of game drives, content and timing of meals, and length of the safari is entirely flexible so as to fully accommodate your needs. Lively kids? Nobody’s fussing. There’s no finer way for a young family, or small group, preferring a less structured holiday, to travel together.

We have a selection of entirely private tours for intimate groups of four to eight people, travelling with your own Tour Guide and Driver - a superb option for a 50th birthday party treat for esteemed clients, or simply family or friends who prefer exclusivity and privacy.

Our NQF (National Qualifications Framework) and FGASA (Field Guides Association of Southern Africa) qualified permanent Tour Guides are the very best calibre of staff. Consistently being awarded as winners in various Guiding categories such as Western Cape Guide, Tourist Guiding Excellence and Best Tourist Guide of the Year, many of these passionate staff members hold university degrees in marketing, photography, tourism and education but have chosen to place their focus on realising the dreams of our guests. Join them on one of our exciting Guided Journeys or Tailor-Made packages – you will be completely blown away by their knowledge, excitement and passion! They speak English, German and Spanish, and our wider network of Tour Guides speak most other languages. All of our Safari Guides have completed additional courses enhancing their skills to ensure the best possible experience for guests. These include the Kruger National Park Orientation Course, a botany course at Skukuza Nursery by a qualified botany expert and some have completed the VPDA Course (Viewing Potential Dangerous Animals).

As one of our guides said, ‘....tour guides are ambassadors of the country and have to ensure they put the country on the map. Guiding is no longer a hobby but a profession and guides have to be trained to do the job so that they render an excellent service for tourists...’.

Our fully Guided Journeys are the perfect means to travel and experience Africa with your family to share an adventure and create inspirational and lasting memories. On these we see grandparents, parents, and children connecting, sharing activities, sharing discoveries, and creating bright, collective family memories.

Our inter-generational Tour Guides also understand the ever-changing needs of participants - no matter their age or fitness level. There is something enchanting about being miles away from the rituals of day-to-day life and enjoying a journey together that brings out the spirited side of family members of all ages.

A minimum age limit of 7 years applies to our scheduled Guided Journeys, however, there is no age restriction on our private Guided Journeys.
